Fiji and New Zealand qualify for 2027 FIFA U-17 World Cup

Fiji and New Zealand have become the first nations to qualify, alongside hosts Qatar, for the 2027 edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup. The pair secured their passage to the finals with semi-final victories at the ongoing OFC U-16 Men’s Championship in Papua New Guinea.

Fiji edge Solomon Islands in penalty shootout

In the first semi-final in Port Moresby, it took penalties to separate Fiji and the Solomon Islands. A deflected effort from Solomon Islands forward Gregy Gau late in the first half was the closest either side came to scoring in regulation time. The match went straight to penalties, where Fiji goalkeeper Kirikiti Biu made two saves and substitute Maikeli Ratuove converted the decisive spot-kick, securing a 4-2 shootout win for the Baby Bula Boys.

This marks Fiji's third consecutive qualification for the U-17 World Cup, having first qualified in 2024. Head coach Sunil Kumar praised his team's resilience: “I’m so, so proud of the boys and the staff who have all really worked hard. It was a match that could have gone either way. We’ll be going to the U-17 World Cup for the third time and that’s a milestone achievement for Fiji. We’ve shown that we have a pathway for young players and going to the World Cup gives another level of game-time and experience.”

New Zealand dominate hosts to reach final

In the second semi-final, regional powerhouse New Zealand proved too strong for the hosts, Papua New Guinea. After a scoreless first half, the Junior All Whites struck five minutes after the restart when Davi Valle Dos Santos breezed past three defenders and squared for Cruz Pietersen to poke home at the back post. Pietersen, who last year trained with English side Bournemouth as a 14-year-old, doubled the lead on the hour, stroking home a Jack Clegg cross. He completed his hat-trick in the fourth minute of stoppage time, finishing after being set up by substitute Tristan Bancroft, to round out a 3-0 win.

With the victory, New Zealand have qualified for an 11th consecutive U-17 World Cup. The ten-time defending continental champions will face Fiji in Saturday's final, while the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea will contest Oceania's third and final qualifying spot.

New Zealand forward Cruz Pietersen expressed his pride: “It’s a real honour, we worked so hard to get to this point. One of our goals was to qualify for the World Cup and I think we did that in just the right way. It’s a real honour and prize to get to play on the world stage, a dream for anyone and in 50 years’ time I’ll probably look back with my grandkids and tell them that I played in the World Cup.”
