FIFA Highlights Ten Stars of Women's Africa Cup of Nations

Short overview
FIFA profiles ten standout players from the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, where Cameroon won their first title and four teams qualified for the 2027 Women's World Cup.
The 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations concluded last weekend with Cameroon crowned champions, and FIFA has now highlighted ten players who made a significant impact on the continental stage. The tournament, held in Morocco, saw Cameroon defeat Malawi 3-0 in the final to claim their first continental title, while also securing direct qualification for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2027 in Brazil.
Alongside Cameroon, Malawi—who reached the final on their AFCON debut—Algeria, and hosts Morocco all booked their places at the World Cup. South Africa and Ghana advanced to the FIFA Play-Off Tournament, keeping their hopes alive for a spot in Brazil.
Cameroon's Historic Triumph
Cameroon's journey to the title was remarkable, especially given that they had initially lost to Algeria in qualification over two legs (3-1) before being handed a reprieve. They made the most of their second chance, turning their campaign into a title-winning run. Central to their success was Monique Ngock, who was named Player of the Tournament. Before the competition, Ngock had told FIFA: "We're not saying we're going to win the AFCON, but this is a fresh opportunity and we have to take it to show a different side of ourselves." Those words proved prophetic as she dominated midfield with tireless energy, winning duels and consistently driving her team forward.
Defensive Solidity
Cameroon conceded just twice in six matches, a feat largely credited to their goalkeeper Michaely Bihina. The 22-year-old SL Benfica shot-stopper remained unbeaten after the group stage, despite facing Nigeria, Morocco, and Malawi. In the semi-final against Morocco, she saved Fatima Tagnaout's late extra-time penalty and then stopped three more spot-kicks in the shoot-out. Her performances drew praise from Fabrice Ondoa, Cameroon's 2017 African champion, who said: "Congratulations, girls. Michaely Bihina, the people's goalkeeper."
Standout Performers Across the Continent
Temwa Chawinga, the younger of the Chawinga sisters, finished as the tournament's top scorer with five goals and two assists, edging out Cameroon's Marie Ngah Manga and Zambia's Barbra Banda. The Kansas City Current forward was clinical throughout, scoring twice in a stunning 3-2 win over Nigeria and proving decisive in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. Her performances were central to Malawi's historic run to the final.
Algeria's Marine Dafeur, a former Lille midfielder, delivered what many considered the goal of the tournament with an exquisite free-kick against Kenya in the group stage. Beyond that spectacular strike, she dictated Algeria's play from midfield, bringing intelligence and balance to a side that reached the continental podium for the first time and secured a maiden Women's World Cup qualification.
Morocco's captain Hanane Ait El Haj, a new signing for Deportivo Alaves, was another standout. The attack-minded full-back contributed five assists and a goal, leading her team both on and off the pitch. Her ability to deliver early crosses and burst down the flank made her a constant threat, and she is expected to shine again at the World Cup in Brazil.
These players, along with others, showcased the depth of talent in African women's football, setting the stage for an exciting World Cup in 2027.
