Solomon Islands secure U-17 World Cup spot for second time

The Solomon Islands have secured the third and final Oceania ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2027, defeating Papua New Guinea 4-1 on penalties in the third-place play-off of the OFC U-16 Men's Championship. The match, held at the PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby, ended 1-1 after regulation time, sending the contest straight to a penalty shootout.

Match Summary

Papua New Guinea dominated the first half, creating several clear chances. Goalkeeper Eddie Aefi was instrumental for the Solomon Islands, twice denying Boas Tommy from close range to keep the score level at halftime.

The deadlock was broken midway through the second half when Papua New Guinea captain Matthew Sopo unleashed a stunning volley from the top of the box, finding the back of the net with his right foot. The goal put the hosts ahead 1-0.

With six minutes remaining in regulation time, a costly mistake by Papua New Guinea goalkeeper Luther Rodney allowed the Solomon Islands to equalize. Rodney spilled a cross from substitute Johnson Haiharu, and Andriano Kabolo was on hand to nod the ball home from close range, making it 1-1.

The match went directly to a penalty shootout, where Aefi made a crucial save on Papua New Guinea's second spot-kick. The Solomon Islands converted all four of their penalties to win the shootout 4-1.

Historic Qualification

This marks the second time the Solomon Islands have qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, their first appearance since Brazil 2019. They will join New Zealand and Fiji as Oceania's representatives at the tournament in Qatar.

Solomon Islands head coach Henry Fa'arodo expressed his pride in the team's achievement. "Words can't explain it, I'm so grateful for the boys in terms of their efforts and performance. I believe they deserve to be where they are now. I took this team two years ago, 80% of them as U-15s and they've grown so much," Fa'arodo said.

The OFC U-16 Men's Championship served as the qualifying tournament for the FIFA U-17 World Cup, with the top three teams earning berths. New Zealand and Fiji had already secured their places before the final matchday.
