From Barcelona to Bromley: Inside Putellas' move to LCL

Short overview
Alexia Putellas, two-time Ballon d'Or winner, has joined London City Lionesses in a landmark transfer. The move unites the Spanish star with owner Michele Kang, who aims to build a WSL powerhouse.
When Michele Kang acquired London City Lionesses in December 2023, the prospect of Alexia Putellas joining as a player two and a half years later seemed far-fetched. Yet the two-time Ballon d'Or winner has now signed with the independent club from Bromley, marking the biggest transfer in Women's Super League history.
Putellas' Legacy and Decision to Leave Barcelona
Putellas, known in Spain as 'La Reina' (the Queen), spent 14 years at Barcelona, winning 38 major trophies including 10 league titles and four Champions Leagues. She earned back-to-back Ballon d'Or awards in 2021 and 2022 before suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on the eve of Euro 2022. She recovered to win the World Cup with Spain in 2023 and was part of the squad that finished runners-up to England at Euro 2025.
With her contract expiring at Barcelona, sources say Putellas felt it was time for a change. She had offers from England, Mexico and the United States, with Boston Legacy providing the stiffest competition. However, she admired US billionaire Kang's ambitions for the women's game, having been a long-standing rival to Kang's successful French club Lyon.
The Kang Connection
Putellas revealed on Wednesday that she and Kang first met in Miami four years ago for dinner, where they discussed their vision for the game. Sources close to the owner suggest a business partnership beyond Putellas' playing career is likely to develop. Putellas wanted to join a club where she could have an impact off the pitch as well as on it, and leave a legacy to grow the future of the game.
Kang's influence was pivotal, with regular conversations at events and award ceremonies. London City Lionesses were always confident they could persuade Putellas, despite only agreeing terms in recent weeks. The club did not approach Barcelona in January because Putellas wanted to see out the season without distractions. Her contract was signed this month, and it is understood she did not discuss her decision with any teammates.
Financial Details and Future Plans
Kang's financial backing was crucial. Sources at London City say Putellas is earning less than £1m as a base salary, with potential add-ons and bonuses increasing it. There are no image rights deals. Putellas has given up Champions League football this season—a significant decision for someone who captained Barcelona to victory in 2026. However, London City's five-year plan includes competing for trophies and challenging for a European qualification spot in the WSL this season.
With a World Cup looming in 2027, Putellas wanted to be settled, and a three-year deal in Bromley secures her future. The move underscores the growing ambition of London City Lionesses under Kang's ownership and marks a new chapter for one of the game's greatest players.
