Sister Acts Set to Shine at FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027

Short overview
Malawi's Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga have qualified for the FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027, joining a rare group of siblings who have competed at the tournament. Since 1991, only four sister pairs have played, and more are hoping to follow.
The FIFA Women's World Cup Brazil 2027™ is set to become a family affair as sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga guided Malawi to their first-ever global showpiece. The duo inspired the African nation to the semi-finals of the 2026 Women's African Cup of Nations, securing a historic qualification.
Since the Women's World Cup began in 1991, only four pairs of sisters have competed at the tournament. The Chawingas will join that exclusive list, and as FIFA notes, more siblings are hoping to follow in their footsteps at Brazil 2027 and beyond.
A Legacy of Sibling Success
The tradition of sisters at the Women's World Cup includes several notable pairs. Sam Mewis, a key figure in the USA's 2019 triumph, played in six of seven matches and scored two goals. Her older sister Kristie made her World Cup debut at age 32 in 2023, scoring with her first touch in a penalty shootout against Sweden.
Twins and Defensive Duos
Delphine and Estelle Cascarino became the first identical twins to play at a Women's World Cup, though in different tournaments. Delphine featured for France in 2019, while Estelle appeared in 2023. With France qualified for Brazil 2027, they hope to compete together.
Allyson and Chantelle Swaby are the only sisters to have played in two Women's World Cups, both for Jamaica. They partnered in central defence, helping the Reggae Girlz to their first victory and knockout stage appearance in 2023.
New Frontiers
Olivia and Chandler McDaniel played key roles in the Philippines' first World Cup appearance in 2023. They will aim for a second finals after the Philippines qualified via the Women's Asian Cup.
Alyssa Thompson, who played for the USA in 2023 at age 18, has since become a key player for Chelsea and one of the world's most feared forwards.
