Wales international goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel has joined Watford on loan from Manchester United for the duration of the 2026-27 season. The 21-year-old returns to the Hornets after a previous loan spell during the second half of the 2023-24 campaign, and is now set for a full season with the club in Women's Super League 2.
Rising through the ranks
Middleton-Patel made her senior debut for Manchester United against Newcastle United in December 2024. Under manager Marc Skinner, she made three appearances last season, including a standout performance in the Red Devils' Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford.
A Manchester United statement said: "We will be tracking Saf's progress closely and wish her the very best of luck."
International experience
On the international stage, Middleton-Patel has become a key figure for Wales. She started five of the team's six World Cup qualifying group stage matches earlier this year. She will aim to retain the number one jersey as Rhian Wilkinson's side face Albania in a two-legged play-off first round in October. The winner of that tie will take on either Romania or Norway in the second round.
Middleton-Patel has previously had loan spells with Blackburn Rovers, Leicester City, and Coventry United. Her journey has been notable not only for her performances but also for her advocacy as an autistic elite footballer, a role model who has spoken openly about her experiences.
