Short overview
Manchester City have signed England international Niamh Charles from Chelsea for £500,000. The left-back, 27, joins on a three-year deal after six years at Chelsea, where she won five WSL titles. Charles aims to secure regular game time ahead of the World Cup.
Manchester City have completed the signing of England international Niamh Charles from Women's Super League rivals Chelsea for a fee of £500,000. The left-back has agreed a three-year contract with the club, ending a six-year spell at Stamford Bridge where she made 173 appearances.
Career at Chelsea
During her time with Chelsea, Charles, 27, won five WSL titles, four FA Cups, and three League Cups. She was also part of the squad that reached the Women's Champions League final in 2021, losing to Barcelona under former manager Emma Hayes. Charles began her professional career at Liverpool before moving to Chelsea in 2018.
Player's Reaction
“I'm really happy to be here and I can't wait to get started,” Charles said. “I've seen from the outside and have obviously played against City over the past few years, and they had great success this year. What they're building as a team is something I wanted to be a part of. It's the perfect fit and hopefully we can have some good times together.”
Context and Squad Impact
Charles' arrival at City coincides with the departure of Spain full-back Leila Ouahabi, who left for Chicago Stars FC. Charles will wear the number 21 shirt. Her signing provides vital WSL and Champions League experience for City, who won their first WSL title in a decade in May. The club is adding depth as they aim to challenge in Europe.
City have also signed England forward Beth Mead from Arsenal, while top scorer Khadija Shaw signed a new four-year deal in May. Charles' departure from Chelsea coincides with the arrival of Republic of Ireland international Katie McCabe from Arsenal.
International Ambitions
Charles, who has 34 caps for the Lionesses, is looking to secure regular game time to cement her place in Sarina Wiegman's squad for next year's World Cup. She notably scored a penalty in the shootout victory over Spain in the Euro 2025 final.
Club's Perspective
City's director of football, Therese Sjogran, said: “To add a player of Niamh's ability and experience to our squad after the success of last season is a huge positive. We're all excited to see what she can bring and despite everything she's already achieved in the game, we firmly believe her best years are still to come. She has the drive to become a better player every day and also challenge her team-mates to do the same.”
