Jesse Marsch: From Leeds rejection to Canada World Cup hero

Short overview
Jesse Marsch has led Canada to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time after a 6-0 win over Qatar. The American coach overcame setbacks at Leeds United and being passed over for the USMNT job to achieve this milestone.
Jesse Marsch has etched his name into Canadian soccer history by guiding the national team to the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time. On Sunday, Canada will face South Africa in Los Angeles for a place in the round of 16, a remarkable achievement for a coach who has endured significant professional setbacks.
Overcoming Career Setbacks
Marsch's journey to this point has been far from smooth. The 52-year-old American lasted less than a year as Leeds United manager in the Premier League, keeping the club up on the final day of the 2022-23 season before being sacked after a winless run of seven games. He later described the decision as "foolish."
In 2024, Marsch was a leading candidate for the United States men's national team head coach role, a position he believed was his. However, U.S. Soccer opted to appoint Mauricio Pochettino instead, a snub that still fuels him. "I think what happened with the USA role burns with him, but it burns with him in a way that helps him now," said Scott French of Soccer America, who has worked with Marsch. "He has a chip on his shoulder."
Transforming Canada's Soccer Culture
Marsch was appointed Canada head coach in May 2024 with a mandate to "unite the Canadian soccer community" and prepare the team to be competitive for the 2026 World Cup. He threw himself into the role, traveling to nine cities in 10 days, meeting with fans, and immersing himself in Canadian culture. He also focused on building personal connections with players, making individual visits and inviting them and their families to his home in Italy.
One notable example is midfielder Liam Miller, who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in late 2024. Marsch spent significant time visiting and checking on Miller, even inviting him to stay at his home in Italy during rehabilitation. Miller not only returned to full fitness but helped Hull City secure promotion to the Premier League and is now a key player for Canada at the World Cup. "I've got to know all the players but Liam I have got to know really well and I think our relationship has become something that he has come to rely on," Marsch said.
Group Stage Success and Mind Games
Canada advanced from the group stage after a dominant 6-0 victory over Qatar. However, a defeat to Switzerland in the final group game cost them first place and the chance to stay in Canada for the round of 32. Marsch attempted mind games before that match by including star player Alphonso Davies on the bench despite knowing he was not fit to play. "I wanted Switzerland to have to think about him," Marsch explained. "I listened to their news conference and they had three questions about Alphonso Davies, so they at least had to prepare for that."
Despite the setback, Marsch's bond with the team and fans remains strong. "Either the players have confidence in me or are stuck with me," he said, reflecting on his leadership style.
