Panama's Seven World Cup Veterans Return for 2026

Short overview
Seven players from Panama's 2018 World Cup debut squad are set to feature in the 2026 tournament. The experienced septet, including Amir Murillo and Yoel Barcenas, will aim to help Panama secure their first World Cup win in Group L against Croatia, England, and Ghana.
Eight years after Panama made their FIFA World Cup debut at Russia 2018, seven players from that historic squad remain integral to the national team. Yoel Barcenas, Eric Davis, Ismael Diaz, Fidel Escobar, Anibal Godoy, Amir Murillo, and Jose Luis Rodriguez have all been selected for the 2026 tournament, where Panama will face Croatia, England, and Ghana in Group L.
Experience Key for Panama's Campaign
Panama head coach Thomas Christiansen emphasized the value of experience at the squad announcement: “They’re no longer rookies—some, of course, are making their debut, while others have experience—but together they need to perform at their best.” The seven veterans will be crucial as Panama seeks its first World Cup victory.
Player Evolution Since 2018
Each of the seven players has developed significantly since Russia 2018. Yoel Barcenas, once a speedy winger known for 1v1 battles, has evolved into a midfield presence with improved control, passing, and shooting accuracy. Eric Davis has added physical strength to his game as a left-back, overcoming earlier injuries and becoming a vocal leader. Ismael Diaz, a raw 21-year-old attacker in 2018, is now Panama's main marksman, having won the Golden Boot at the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup with six goals.
Fidel Escobar, who played all three matches in Russia, found stability at Costa Rican club Saprissa in 2022, improving his passing from the back and defensive organization. Anibal Godoy remains a midfield staple, curbing rash challenges and enhancing his passing, as shown by increased assist totals. Amir Murillo has made the most strides, moving from MLS to European clubs Anderlecht, Marseille, and Besiktas, becoming a standout defender with excellent crossing ability. Jose Luis Rodriguez, who started Panama's debut match against Belgium in 2018, rounds out the septet.
Group L Challenge
Panama will need the experience of these seven players to navigate a tough group. Their combined growth and exposure to high-pressure matches, particularly Murillo's European competition experience, will be assets as they aim for a historic first win.
