Short overview

Croatia defeated Ghana 2-1 in their final Group L match, with goals from Petar Sucic and Nikola Vlasic. The win lifted Croatia to second place in the group, setting up a knockout stage clash with the second-placed team from Group K.

Croatia secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ghana in their final Group L match, leapfrogging the already-qualified Black Stars to finish as group runners-up. Goals from Petar Sucic and Nikola Vlasic ensured Zlatko Dalic's side advanced to the knockout stage, where they will face the second-placed team from Group K.

Match Summary

Croatia entered the match knowing that a draw would likely be enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, but they showed attacking intent from the opening whistle. The first warning sign came in the 17th minute when Vlasic found space 20 yards from goal and struck the outside of the post with a powerful right-foot shot.

The breakthrough arrived just after the half-hour mark. Sucic unleashed a stunning 30-yard drive that crashed through a couple of attempted blocks and nestled inside the left-hand post, giving Croatia a deserved lead. Ghana offered little in attack during the first half, with Antoine Semenyo's narrow miss just before halftime being their only real threat.

Second-Half Drama

Ghana improved significantly after the break, and their pressure paid off in the 73rd minute. Derrick Luckassen sneaked in at a free-kick to side-foot home the equalizer, capitalizing on poor marking from the Croatian defense. However, Ghana's defensive frailties proved costly just ten minutes later. Luka Modric's corner found Vlasic unmarked at the far post, and he headed home off the inside of the left-hand post to restore Croatia's lead.

Record and Reaction

Sucic, at 22 years and 245 days, became the second-youngest player to score for Croatia at the FIFA World Cup, after Josko Gvardiol (20 years, 328 days against Morocco in 2022). Ghana forward Brandon Thomas-Asante expressed disappointment after the match: "There's a degree of disappointment in camp. We knew that there was the opportunity to win the group. That was our intention, our ambition, and there was the possibility. So, of course, it was disappointing. We haven't done that, but we have to take the positive and we're into the next round. We want to go as far as we can in the tournament."

Croatia's victory ensured they finished second in Group L, while Ghana, despite already qualifying, dropped to third place. Both teams advance to the knockout stage, with Croatia set to face the second-placed team from Group K.
