Short overview

Harry Kane scored twice in England's opening win against Croatia, a stark contrast to his slow start in Qatar 2022. The striker looks fitter and stronger under Thomas Tuchel, with a system that maximizes his abilities.

It took Harry Kane four games and 269 minutes to register a single shot on target at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He appeared fatigued early in that tournament, and many observers felt he needed a rest after England's first two matches. This time, the situation could not be more different. After scoring twice in England's 4-2 victory over Croatia, Kane is on top of the world.

A fast start relieves pressure

For a striker, getting off to a good start at a major tournament is crucial. Former England striker Alan Shearer, who scored in England's opening match against Tunisia at the 1998 World Cup, knows the feeling well. "Honestly, it was a massive relief - not only for the team to get the win, but to get on the scoresheet myself, as captain and our main goalscorer, when everyone was looking at me to deliver," Shearer said. "For all the same reasons, I know Kane will be feeling exactly the same way after the way he played on Wednesday."

Kane had to watch other superstars like Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, and Lionel Messi score multiple goals in their opening matches. "He would have been absolutely desperate to join the party and get off the mark in his first game too, so to do that after only 12 minutes and go on to get another one as well, is huge for him - and for England," Shearer added.

Fitter and stronger under Tuchel

Kane's physical condition has also improved. Shearer noted that Kane did not appear 100% fit at Euro 2024, and the team's setup struggled to get the best out of him. "Then, whenever he dropped deep to get on the ball, there was no-one up front for him, or anyone else, to find with an out-ball. He also brought an extra defender back with him into midfield too, so there was less room and time for England in those areas."

Under Thomas Tuchel, England are using Kane similarly to how Bayern Munich did. Tuchel previously managed Kane at Bayern and understands how to maximize his impact. Against Croatia, when Kane dropped deep, players like Noni Madueke, Jude Bellingham, and Anthony Gordon surged forward, creating problems for defenders with their pace and energy.

"The other difference, though, is Kane himself. He is still playing the same way, but to me he looks fitter and stronger than before," Shearer said. "He's come into this tournament off the back of a brilliant campaign for Bayern Munich and looks very sharp and very confident - as you would do after scoring 61 goals in one season."

Mental strength and defensive work

Kane's mental resilience is also evident. He continues to work hard defensively for England, a trait that complements his goal-scoring prowess. With arguably the toughest group match out of the way, and Ghana and Panama next, Kane's confidence is soaring. Shearer recalled Kane's Golden Boot-winning performance at the 2018 World Cup, where he scored five goals in England's first two games. "His eyes must be lighting up," Shearer said.
