Scotland denied penalties in narrow World Cup defeat to Morocco

Short overview
Scotland lost 1-0 to Morocco in the World Cup, with two penalty claims rejected. Former referee Christina Unkel said one should have been given, while pundits disagreed.
Scotland fell to a 1-0 defeat against Morocco in their second World Cup group match, a result that left the team and fans questioning several refereeing decisions. The match, played in Boston, saw Morocco take the lead after just 70 seconds through Ismael Saibari, but Scotland grew into the game and felt they should have been awarded two second-half penalties.
Penalty claims and referee controversy
Scotland's first penalty appeal came when John McGinn went down under a challenge from Neil El Aynaoui. Later, Scott McTominay also fell in the box. Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev waved away both claims, a decision that drew sharp reactions from pundits and former officials.
Former referee Christina Unkel, analyzing the game for ITV, stated that the McTominay incident should have been a penalty. "I think it is a penalty kick," Unkel said. "The referee is known for tolerating a higher level of physical contact but you don't need a lot to give a penalty. It's a simple foul, there's contact at the knee position and there's another angle that suggests there might be a step on the left boot."
However, ITV pundits Roy Keane and Ange Postecoglou disagreed with Unkel's assessment, arguing that the contact was minimal. Scotland head coach Steve Clarke was more diplomatic but expressed uncertainty about several calls. "There were one or two decisions that I'm not too sure about," Clarke said. "I thought the John McGinn one was more a penalty [than the Scott McTominay one]. On another day somebody could give that."
Red card debate adds to frustration
Beyond the penalty claims, Scotland also felt aggrieved that Moroccan defender Issa Diop received only a yellow card in the first half for a challenge on Che Adams. Diop pulled back Adams as the Scotland forward was running clear on goal. Former Scotland forwards Neil McCann and James McFadden both argued that the offense warranted a red card.
"For me, it is [a red]," said McCann, now manager of Kilmarnock. "Che Adams is goal-side and he's clearly pulled back. I think with the flight of the ball, he's going to get onto it and there's no-one on the cover." McFadden added: "He's running onto it, straight towards goal. It's 100% an obvious goalscoring opportunity. If the referee deems it a foul, he has to send him off."
Clarke echoed that sentiment, noting that "on another day that could be a red." However, former Scotland winger Pat Nevin defended Tantashev's overall approach, calling his display "bizarre" but acceptable in the context of a more physical game. "You put that referee in a game 10 years ago and he's perfectly normal," Nevin said. "I'm all right with that. He made a couple of mistakes but, in reality, I'd rather have him than most of the referees we get these days."
McGinn: 'Morocco got away with one'
McGinn, who was adamant he was fouled, insisted that Scotland cannot dwell on the officiating. "Out the corner of my eye, I could see [the Morocco defender] charging in. I got first contact to the ball and he took me out. It's a penalty kick for me. Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't. If it was given on the field, no chance it's overturned," he said. "Morocco have got away with one there. But we need to be better and create chances from open play, not rely on referee's decisions."
Scotland, who beat Haiti 1-0 in their opening match, now face a crucial final group game. The defeat leaves them needing a positive result to advance, with the team aware that fine margins have so far defined their tournament.
