Japan and Sweden advance after 1-1 draw in World Cup group finale

Short overview
Japan and Sweden both advanced to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 1-1 draw in Dallas. Daizen Maeda scored for Japan in the 56th minute, but Anthony Elanga equalized six minutes later.
A hard-fought 1-1 draw between Japan and Sweden at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday secured both teams' places in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Japan advanced as Group F runners-up, while Sweden qualified as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
Match Overview
Japan entered the match knowing a draw would guarantee a top-two finish, while Sweden needed a win to leapfrog their opponents into second place. The Samurai Blue quickly asserted control, dictating the tempo and forcing Sweden deep into their own half. Daizen Maeda headed narrowly wide early on, and Yukinari Sugawara tested Sweden goalkeeper Jacob Zetterstrom for the first time. Keito Nakamura came even closer to breaking the deadlock, but his cleverly disguised effort was brilliantly tipped around the post by Zetterstrom.
Second-Half Goals
Japan broke the deadlock ten minutes after the restart. Maeda latched onto a superb through ball from Ritsu Doan and finished smartly into the corner to make it 1-0 in the 56th minute. However, Sweden responded quickly. Just six minutes later, Anthony Elanga fired a ferocious 20-yard shot past Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to restore parity.
With Sweden in the ascendancy after the equalizer, Suzuki denied Alexander Isak and Elanga further goals that would have sent Sweden through in second place. The contest ended all square, a result that suited both teams.
Group Standings and Knockout Path
The Netherlands defeated already-eliminated Tunisia to claim top spot in Group F. As group runners-up, Japan will face Group C winners Brazil in the Round of 32. Sweden's next opponent will be determined by the draw, facing the winner of Group B, E, or I.
Notably, Japan went unbeaten in the World Cup group stage for the first time in their history.
Player Reactions
Sweden's Anthony Elanga praised his team's effort: "I really wanted to win today, but I think a point was enough in the end. And listen, I'm really proud of the whole team, especially [GK] Jakob [Zetterstrom] who came in today. I think he played a terrific game."
Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki reflected on the match: "The first half was a tight match. On the other hand, in the second half we got the lead, but after being equalized, the momentum shifted to the opponent. Despite that, I think we achieved what was important—conceding the minimum, not losing, and securing at least a point. Being able to carry this unbeaten momentum into the Brazil match next is definitely positive."
Japan midfielder Ao Tanaka spoke about veteran defender Yuto Nagatomo: "It's not for me to say, but he's a wonderful player—appearing this many times in Japanese soccer is remarkable. In this tournament, he's guiding the team in a positive direction both on and off the pitch. Of course, he played today, and the fact that we've come this far is thanks to not just him but many senior players. That said, I feel like our real battle starts now. So I think it would be good to battle alongside him moving forward."
Daizen Maeda added: "With him (Nagatomo) around, this team is united. Even when he's not on the pitch, he's been cheering us on from the bench, which is why I could take the field today. That's something I need to learn from. Without it being just for his sake, I want all of us to see something beautiful together."
