Arsenal sign Spain defender Ona Batlle on free transfer

Short overview
Arsenal have signed Spain international Ona Batlle on a free transfer after her departure from Barcelona. The 27-year-old full-back, a World Cup winner and two-time Champions League victor, has agreed a four-year deal with an option for a further year.
Arsenal have completed the signing of Spain international Ona Batlle on a free transfer following her exit from Barcelona. The 27-year-old full-back, widely regarded as one of the best in her position globally, has joined on a four-year contract with an option to extend for a further season.
Proven winner returns to WSL
Batlle leaves Barcelona after a three-year spell in which she made 114 appearances, winning three consecutive league titles and two UEFA Women's Champions League trophies. She also started the 2025 Champions League final, which Arsenal won against Barcelona. Batlle previously played in the Women's Super League for Manchester United from 2020 to 2023, making 77 appearances before returning to Spain.
“Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I can't wait to feel the joy of playing in front of our supporters at Emirates Stadium alongside so many great players,” Batlle said. “I want to win trophies and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.”
International pedigree
Batlle has earned 76 caps for Spain and was part of the squad that won the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. She also finished as runner-up to England at Euro 2025. Her individual accolades include being named in the FIFA Best XI in both 2024 and 2025. She is believed to have signed a pre-contract agreement with Arsenal earlier this year.
Manager and director praise
Arsenal manager Renee Slegers said: “I'm delighted that we've been able to bring Ona to the club. She's a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes. She's a winner and we want to go for more wins together.”
Clare Wheatley, Arsenal's director of women's football, added: “Ona's track record at both club and international level speaks for itself. She's a proven winner with a hunger to add more trophies. We're delighted to bring one of the best defenders in the world to Arsenal.”
Batlle will wear the number 22 shirt at Arsenal.
Strategic recruitment drive
Arsenal were disappointed not to challenge for the Women's Super League title last season despite winning the Champions League in 2025. The club underwent a transitional period, with several high-profile players, including Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe and England international Beth Mead, departing as their contracts neared expiry.
However, Arsenal have moved early in the transfer market, securing pre-contract agreements for Batlle and England midfielder Georgia Stanway earlier this year. The club have also confirmed the signings of Selina Cerci, Geraldine Reuteler, and Stanway. Batlle's arrival strengthens a full-back department that already includes USA international Emily Fox, giving Arsenal two of the world's best in that position.
The club have revamped their recruitment strategy following the appointment of former England striker Jodie Taylor as their first Women's technical director in January. The aim is to plan three transfer windows ahead and ensure a constant evolution of talent.
