Short overview

With the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage underway, teams in Groups A-L are vying for spots in the Round of 32. Co-hosts Mexico can secure Group A top spot on June 18 if they beat Korea Republic and Czechia fails to beat South Africa.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage is in full swing, and the permutations for qualification to the Round of 32 are becoming clearer. With 48 teams competing across 12 groups (A through L), the top two from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams, will advance. Here is a breakdown of the scenarios for Group A and an overview of the remaining groups.

Group A: Mexico, Korea Republic, South Africa, Czechia

Group A features co-hosts Mexico, Korea Republic, South Africa, and Czechia. After the first round of matches, the qualification picture is taking shape.

Mexico's Path to Group A Winners

Mexico, as tournament co-hosts, will qualify as Group A winners on June 18 if they defeat Korea Republic and Czechia do not beat South Africa. This would see them face a third-placed team from Groups C, E, F, H, or I in the Round of 32 in Mexico City on June 30.

Korea Republic's Chance to Top the Group

Following their victory over Czechia in the opening match, Korea Republic, led by coach Hong Myung-bo, will secure first place in Group A if they defeat Mexico and South Africa fail to beat Czechia.

South Africa's Elimination Scenario

The 2010 World Cup hosts, South Africa, lost their first match to Mexico. They will be eliminated from the tournament if they lose to Czechia and Korea Republic avoid defeat against Mexico.

Czechia's Do-or-Die Situation

Veteran coach Miroslav Koubek's Czechia side will be knocked out if they lose to South Africa and Mexico avoid defeat against Korea Republic.

Groups B through L: Early Uncertainty

In Group B, Canada drew 1-1 with Bosnia and Herzegovina, while Qatar and Switzerland also played to a 1-1 draw. As a result, none of the four teams can secure qualification or be eliminated in their second match. Taking a minimum of four points from their next two games will guarantee a place in the Round of 32 as either group winners or runners-up.

Information on Groups C through L will be released after all teams in those groups have played their first match.
