Zlatko Dalic Appointed as New UAE Head Coach

Zlatko Dalic, who recently stepped down as Croatia's head coach after their Round of 32 exit at the FIFA World Cup, has been appointed as the new head coach of the United Arab Emirates national team. He succeeds Cosmin Olaroiu, who was dismissed after the UAE failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

Return to Familiar Territory

Dalic is no stranger to football in the Emirates. From 2014 to 2017, he managed Al Ain, one of the region's most successful clubs, where he won the Pro League, the President's Cup, and the Super Cup. He also guided Al Ain to the final of the 2016 AFC Champions League.

The 59-year-old now takes charge of a national team aiming to qualify for the 2030 World Cup. The UAE fell to Iraq in the final round of AFC qualification for the recently concluded World Cup and have only appeared at the global finals once, in 1990 in Italy.

International Experience

Dalic's tenure with Croatia spanned several major tournaments. He led his homeland to a third-place finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and the recent tournament in North America marked his third appearance at the global finals. His experience at the highest level of international football will be crucial as the UAE builds toward future competitions.

Building for the Future

The UAE Football Association is also investing in youth development. Last week, another Croatian, Igor Biscan, was named head coach of the UAE U-23 side, signaling a broader strategy to prepare for the 2030 World Cup and beyond.

Dalic's appointment brings a wealth of tactical knowledge and a proven track record in the region, raising hopes that the UAE can finally break through on the international stage.
