World Cup 2026 Matchday 16: Groups G, H, I Decide Knockout Fate

Short overview
Ten teams in Groups G, H, and I compete for knockout spots on June 26. France-Norway and Uruguay-Spain headline, while Egypt, Iran, Belgium, and New Zealand battle in Group G.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage reaches its climax on Matchday 16, Friday, 26 June, as Groups G, H, and I conclude with a thrilling day of action. Ten of the 12 teams in action have yet to secure their places in the knockout stage, though some sides face easier tasks.
Group I: France vs. Norway Highlights
France and Norway have already booked their spots in the Round of 32, but their meeting in Boston will determine which team finishes top of Group I. The match is set to be a showdown between Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, who have scored four goals each so far. In the other group game, Senegal and Iraq, both on zero points, face each other. Their only hope of advancing is by finishing third, and in all likelihood they will need a win to stand a chance.
Group H: Spain and Uruguay Vie for Top Spot
Spain top Group H after two games and will clinch pole position with victory against Uruguay in Guadalajara. A draw would also be enough for Spain to finish first, provided Cabo Verde do not beat Saudi Arabia by a margin of five or more goals. Uruguay, on two points, can grab top spot over La Roja if they win the clash. Cabo Verde, also on two points, can continue their stunning journey on tournament debut by advancing to the knockouts with a win against Saudi Arabia; a draw may also suffice depending on other results. Saudi Arabia will progress if they win the showdown in Houston and Uruguay fail to beat Spain.
Group G: Wide-Open Battle
The day concludes with a highly competitive Group G, where all four places are up for grabs. Egypt lead the group following their comeback win over New Zealand, their first ever World Cup victory. They will seal top spot if they defeat IR Iran, while a draw will also be enough if Belgium fail to overcome New Zealand by a margin of three or more goals. IR Iran still have a chance of grabbing first place, which they can achieve if they beat Egypt and Belgium fail to defeat New Zealand. Belgium, eager to advance after being eliminated from the group stage in 2022, will top the group if they overcome New Zealand by three or more goals and Egypt draw with IR Iran. New Zealand cannot win the group but can qualify for the knockouts for the first time if they defeat Belgium and IR Iran fail to beat Egypt. The All Whites will be eliminated if they lose, regardless of other results.
