Short overview

England defender Marc Guehi says he relishes the prospect of facing Mexico in a hostile atmosphere at the World Cup last 16. The Three Lions overcame Congo DR to set up the clash with the co-hosts, who have a perfect record so far.

England defender Marc Guehi has said he is braced for a feverish, cacophonous atmosphere when the Three Lions face Mexico in the FIFA World Cup 2026™ last-16 clash at Mexico City Stadium on Sunday. The overwhelming majority of fans inside the famous arena will be there to roar on the co-hosts, who are aiming to reach their first World Cup quarter-final in 40 years.

Far from being intimidated by the prospect, Guehi explained why these are the type of occasions he lives for. “We know they're a good team and they've got the fans on their side, so it'll be going into the cauldron,” said the 25-year-old. “But it'll be a fun test. I'd say they're kind of favourites. They're at home and they know the environment a lot better. They haven't conceded so far and have got a perfect record. You come to these competitions to play against top teams, in top atmospheres. It's a match we're all looking forward to.”

England's comeback against Congo DR

England were forced to dig deep into their reserves of determination and self-belief to overcome Congo DR in the last 32. One-nil down with just 15 minutes remaining, their waves of pressure finally paid off when Harry Kane headed an equaliser, before the Three Lions skipper crashed in a fabulous late winner.

“I think it required a lot of patience, a lot of calm,” said Guehi. “And just relentless, invisible work that may or may not be seen to keep chipping away at Congo’s defence. Credit has to go to everyone to have shown that resilience and to have kept going.”

Guehi's mental preparation

Showcasing those qualities may be key to overcoming a fired-up Mexico side. Guehi provided an insight into how he will prepare for such a contest. “I think I know my character,” said the centre-back. “It's just how you're able to cope in those moments. You start picturing in your mind what those moments are going to look like, and visualise them so that when they do come, you're not surprised. It's about trying to show those elements of your character, and having personality in those moments.”

Nico O'Reilly ready for the occasion

Guehi’s Manchester City team-mate Nico O’Reilly is also expected to line up in the England defence on Sunday. The 21-year-old headed to the World Cup on the back of a breakout season for the Premier League giants, and Guehi hailed him as a player "who isn’t fazed by anything".

When O’Reilly was asked about the challenge of facing Mexico on their home turf, his answer backed up Guehi’s appraisal. “I love big occasions, pressure, all the fans chanting and giving it to you,” he said. “I think it'll bring the best out of us and we're ready for it. Conditions are more likely [in favour] for them, but it's not an excuse. We're top players, we're England. I think it won't be a problem for us.”
