Scotland's 1982 World Cup: Stein, Narey, Brazil and a Cartoon

Short overview
Joe Jordan, Gordon Strachan and John Wark recall Scotland's 1982 World Cup campaign, including Jock Stein's leadership, Joe Jordan's goal against the Soviet Union, and the iconic Brazil match.
Scotland's 1982 World Cup campaign in Spain remains one of the most memorable in the nation's history, featuring a dramatic victory over the Soviet Union, a classic encounter with Brazil, and the leadership of legendary manager Jock Stein. Former players Joe Jordan, Gordon Strachan, and John Wark recently shared their recollections of that tournament.
Jock Stein's Influence
Jock Stein, who had led Celtic to European Cup glory in 1967, took charge of Scotland for the 1982 World Cup. His presence commanded respect. "He was a giant of a man, not just physically but in terms of his presence," recalled Joe Jordan. Stein's tactical acumen and motivational skills were key to Scotland's performance.
The Soviet Union Match
Scotland's second group game against the Soviet Union was a must-win after a 5-2 defeat to Brazil. Joe Jordan scored the opening goal, a header from a Gordon Strachan cross. "It was a great ball from Gordon, and I just had to get on the end of it," Jordan said. The match ended 2-2, with Scotland needing a win against New Zealand to advance. They won 5-2, but goal difference meant they were eliminated.
The Brazil Encounter
The group stage match against Brazil is often cited as one of Scotland's finest performances despite a 4-1 loss. David Narey's stunning strike gave Scotland an early lead, curling the ball into the top corner from 25 yards. "It was one of those moments where everything just clicked," Narey recalled. Brazil equalized through Zico, and goals from Oscar, Eder, and Falcao sealed the win. "We played some great football, but Brazil were just a class above," said Gordon Strachan.
A Cartoon Character
John Wark, who scored twice in the tournament, was famously turned into a cartoon character for a children's TV show. "It was surreal seeing myself as a cartoon," Wark laughed. The campaign ended in disappointment, but the memories remain vivid. "We had a great team spirit, and Jock Stein brought the best out of us," Jordan concluded.
