The third edition of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup™ kicks off this month, with OFC Pro League champions Auckland FC taking on AFC Champions League Elite winners Al Ahli in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific play-off. The match, scheduled for 26 August in Jeddah, marks the first of five fixtures that will determine which club succeeds Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain as continental champions.
Paris Saint-Germain, who defeated Flamengo on penalties in last year's final in Al Rayyan, Qatar, will look to defend their title. The European champions await the winner of the play-off in the final, while five other continental kings compete for the chance to join them.
Road to the Final
The winner of the Auckland FC–Al Ahli tie will advance to face African champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the FIFA African-Asian-Pacific Cup, scheduled for 19 September in Pretoria. The victor of that match then progresses to the FIFA Challenger Cup, where they will meet the winner of the FIFA Derby of the Americas.
Concacaf champions Toluca FC will contest the Derby of the Americas against the yet-to-be-determined CONMEBOL Libertadores winners. The South American champions will be decided in the Libertadores final in Montevideo on 28 November.
The FIFA Derby of the Americas, the FIFA Challenger Cup, and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final will all be held at a centralized venue, to be confirmed at a later date.
Tournament History
The FIFA Intercontinental Cup has evolved from the FIFA Club World Championship, first held in 2000 in Brazil with eight teams from six confederations. That tournament ran alongside the Intercontinental Cup, contested by CONMEBOL and UEFA champions since 1960. After a pause between 2001 and 2004, the competition returned in 2005 as the FIFA Club World Cup, expanding its reach and reputation.
In 2024, the tournament was rebranded as the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, giving winners from each of the six confederations an annual opportunity to compete on the global stage. Real Madrid won the inaugural edition in December 2024, defeating Pachuca in front of nearly 70,000 fans at Lusail Stadium in Qatar. Paris Saint-Germain then claimed the 2025 title, beating Flamengo on penalties in Al Rayyan.
