Clarke aims to break Scotland's World Cup barrier

Short overview
Scotland head coach Pedro Martinez Losa says he feels renewed optimism ahead of the team's World Cup opener against Haiti. The match represents a chance to break new ground for Scottish women's football.
Scotland head coach Pedro Martinez Losa has declared himself a 'different' man as his side prepares for a seismic Women's World Cup opener against Haiti. The Spanish coach, who took charge in 2021, says he senses a fresh wave of optimism surrounding the team as they aim to smash Scotland's glass ceiling on the global stage.
Renewed optimism ahead of opener
Martinez Losa, speaking ahead of Friday's Group B match in Perth, Australia, described the tournament as a 'huge opportunity' for his squad. 'I feel like a new man,' he said. 'The energy around the group is incredible. We have a chance to do something special, not just for ourselves but for Scottish football.'
Scotland are making their second World Cup appearance, having debuted in 2019. That campaign ended in group-stage elimination, but Martinez Losa believes his team has evolved significantly since then. 'We have learned from the past. We are more experienced, more resilient, and we believe in our ability to compete with the best,' he added.
Haiti pose formidable challenge
Haiti, ranked 53rd in the world, are making their first World Cup appearance. Despite their underdog status, Martinez Losa warned against complacency. 'Haiti are a dangerous team. They have pace, technical ability, and nothing to lose. We must be at our best to get the result we want,' he said.
The match kicks off at 8:00 PM local time (12:00 PM BST) at Perth Rectangular Stadium. Scotland will also face England and Denmark in Group B, making the opener crucial for their knockout-stage hopes.
Breaking new ground
A victory would mark Scotland's first ever World Cup win, a milestone Martinez Losa is keen to achieve. 'We want to inspire the next generation. Winning would send a message that Scottish women's football is on the rise,' he said.
The squad includes key players such as captain Rachel Corsie, midfielder Caroline Weir, and striker Erin Cuthbert. All are expected to feature against Haiti as Scotland seeks to make history.
