David Odonkor recalls setting up Germany's 2006 World Cup winner

Short overview
David Odonkor recounts his assist for Oliver Neuville's stoppage-time winner against Poland at the 2006 World Cup, a goal that ignited Germany's 'Summer Fairytale' run to third place.
David Odonkor has revisited one of the defining moments of the 2006 FIFA World Cup: his assist for Oliver Neuville's stoppage-time winner against Poland. The goal, scored on 14 June 2006 in Dortmund, is widely regarded as the catalyst for Germany's unexpected run to third place in the tournament, which became known as the 'Summer Fairytale'.
Context of the 'Summer Fairytale'
The 2006 World Cup in Germany was marked by unusually warm weather and record sunshine, creating ideal conditions for large public viewing parties along the 'fan miles'. However, the euphoria was primarily driven by the success of the host nation. Expectations were low before the tournament, but a 4-2 opening win against Costa Rica set a positive tone. The dramatic victory over Poland, however, sent excitement into overdrive.
The match against Poland
Germany dominated the match but failed to score despite numerous chances. Poland defended resolutely, even after Radosław Sobolewski was sent off in the 75th minute. As stoppage time approached, a goalless draw seemed likely. Odonkor, a 22-year-old Borussia Dortmund academy product, had been introduced as a substitute in the 64th minute for his third senior international appearance. Playing at his club's home stadium, Signal Iduna Park, made the occasion extra special.
“What happened that day was unlike anything I experienced at any other stadium, and there’ll never be anything quite like it again. It was utter bedlam: the crowd cheered, chanted and wept with joy, and strangers hugged each other,” Odonkor told FIFA.
The decisive goal
With time running out, Germany continued to press. The winning goal came from a rehearsed move. Bernd Schneider chipped a pass over the Polish defense to Odonkor, who had created space by stepping back toward the halfway line. Odonkor controlled the ball, drove into the box, and delivered a crisp low cross that Neuville turned in with the sole of his boot from close range.
“On the touchline before I came on, Jürgen Klinsmann said to me, ‘David, play your game and use your speed. You can make the difference’,” Odonkor recalled.
The goal sparked wild celebrations across Germany and is considered the moment that ignited the team's dream run. Germany went on to reach the semi-finals, where they lost to Italy, before defeating Portugal in the third-place match.
