Moriyasu signs short-term Japan deal, Oiwa to take reins in 2027

Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu has signed a short-term contract extension that will keep him in charge through the end of the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, after which he will be succeeded by current U-21 national team manager Go Oiwa, the Japan Football Association announced.

Moriyasu's tenure and achievements

Moriyasu, 57, took over the Samurai Blue in July 2018 and has since become the first coach in Japanese history to oversee 100 international matches. In 107 games at the helm, he has recorded 73 wins, 15 draws and 19 defeats. His most recent major tournament was the FIFA World Cup 2026, where Japan were eliminated in the Round of 32 by Brazil.

Final assignment: Asian Cup 2027

Moriyasu will aim to conclude his tenure on a high at the Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia from 7 January to 5 February 2027. Japan are targeting their first continental title since 2011. The tournament will mark the end of Moriyasu's extended contract, which runs only until the conclusion of the event.

Oiwa's appointment and dual role

Go Oiwa, 54, will officially take over as senior national team head coach from March 2027. He will continue to oversee the Japan U-23 side as they prepare for the Los Angeles Olympic Games, serving in a dual capacity. His contract with the senior team will run through the 2030 World Cup.

Oiwa currently leads the U-21 squad and has been tasked with developing the next generation of Japanese talent. The transition plan ensures continuity in the national team's long-term strategy while allowing Oiwa to gain experience at the senior level before fully committing to the role.
