Standout Performers at the 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship

The 2026 Concacaf U-20 Championship in Mexico concluded with Mexico defeating the USA 2-0 in the final, securing their place in the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, and the USA will represent the region at the global showpiece. Mexico also earned a berth in the Men's Olympic Football Tournament Los Angeles 2028, joining hosts USA.

Several players stood out during the tournament, making significant contributions to their teams' success. Here are four who will be ones to watch in next year's World Cup.

Costa Rica's Yerlan Sosa

Yerlan Sosa, a full-back for Alajuelense, was a constant threat for Costa Rica. Primarily a right wing-back, he also operated on the left flank, driving his team's attack forward. In the quarter-final against Haiti, Sosa tormented the opposition defence with his dribbling, winning 1v1s, reaching the byline, and delivering cutback passes. His accurate passing and crossing ability made him a key creative outlet.

Wearing the captain's armband, Sosa showed composure by converting a penalty to level the match in the second half. He then set the tone in the shootout, calmly scoring the first spot-kick as Costa Rica converted all five attempts. Sosa previously featured in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025 and will look to shine again in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.

USA's Oyharcabal

Oyharcabal brings a unique background to the USA squad. Born in Bayonne, France, to a father from San Francisco, he is a member of Spanish side Athletic Club. In Mexico, he showcased his playmaking ability, particularly in the 5-0 win over El Salvador, where he created chances all night and finished with two assists.

An inventive player, Oyharcabal weighs his passes perfectly and can play slick, one-touch balls in the final third. He is a swift and agile dribbler who rarely loses possession, making him a game-changer in the USA's attacking build-up. Having already impressed in the UEFA Youth League with Athletic Club, he is expected to be a key member of Gonzalo Segares' squad at the World Cup.

Canada's Fotsing

Despite missing Canada's final two matches against Jamaica and Mexico due to injury, central midfielder Fotsing played a pivotal role in the Reds' first U-20 World Cup qualification since 2007. A big, physical player, he is technically adept and excels at making late runs into the box or working off the shoulder of defenders. He can go box-to-box and carries the ball well for his age.

Fotsing's style fits well with coach Jesse Marsch's high-tempo, pressing system. He scored twice in Canada's opening win against Panama and provided an assist in the 1-1 draw with Honduras. His club coach, Martin Nash, praised his leadership and maturity: "He is a quiet leader. Even in our team, he has that quality, and he's well respected within our group, so it was natural, I think, for him to be a leader in that (Canada) group. I think he's played really well, he’s good on the ball, and you can see the strength he has. Against some of those players, he seems like a man more than some of the players he's playing against at times."

Mexico's Hugo Camberos

Hugo Camberos has already attracted interest from European giants such as Arsenal and Tottenham. His performances in the championship underlined his potential, contributing to Mexico's title run and their Olympic qualification. Camberos will be a key figure as Mexico aims for success on the global stage.
