Short overview

Lionel Messi tops the Attacking rankings after a hat-trick against Algeria, while Iran's Ramin Rezaeian leads Creativity and Canada's Cornelius heads Defending in the FIFA Power Rankings for the 2026 World Cup group stage opener.

The FIFA Power Rankings, powered by Aramco, have revealed the standout performers in attacking, creative and defensive categories after the opening round of group-stage fixtures at the FIFA World Cup 2026™. Using advanced analytics, the rankings provide a data-driven measure of player performance, assessing contributions across three categories: Attacking, Creativity and Defending.

Attacking Rankings: Messi Leads the Way

Lionel Messi tops the Attacking rankings after scoring a hat-trick in Argentina's 3-0 victory over Algeria. The reigning world champions' captain accounted for 60% of Argentina's attempts at goal, all of their shots on target and all three goals. Argentina's three successful strikes came from 1.58 expected goals (xG), highlighting the efficiency of Messi's finishing. Beyond scoring, Messi received possession 23 times between Algeria's midfield and defensive lines and completed 12 line breaks, repeatedly helping Argentina transform possession into danger.

New Zealand winger Elijah Just claims second place in the Attacking rankings. Just scored with both of his open-play attempts, putting the All Whites ahead on two separate occasions against IR Iran. In a match where Iran generated more attempts and a higher xG than New Zealand, Just's finishing ensured his team emerged with a point in a 2-2 draw.

France forward Kylian Mbappe and Sweden midfielder Yasin Ayari also rank among the leading performers after both scored twice in their opening fixtures. Mbappe combined his finishing with a constant ball-carrying threat against Senegal, placing all four of his open-play attempts on target and completing five ball progressions. Ayari produced the most efficient finishing display of the opening round, outperforming the quality of his chances by 1.86 goals.

Creativity Rankings: Rezaeian Dominates

The Creativity rankings reward players responsible for progressing attacks and creating opportunities. Iran's Ramin Rezaeian leads the category after a standout performance from right-back against New Zealand. Rezaeian completed 16 progressive passes and broke the All Whites' midfield and defensive lines 13 times. His influence extended into the final third, where he scored Iran's first equaliser and contributed directly to their second.

France winger Michael Olise sits second in the Creativity rankings after an influential display in his team's 3-1 win against Senegal. Olise completed 19 line breaks, including 17 through his passing, and contributed to nine attacking sequences that ended with an attempt at goal. He also provided an assist and played a role in two of France's three goals.

Defending Rankings: Cornelius Tops the Charts

Canada's Cornelius heads the Defending category after a dominant display in his team's opening match. The rankings, which track actions that prevent opportunities at the other end of the pitch, highlight Cornelius as the leading defender after the first round of fixtures.

The FIFA Power Rankings, updated throughout the tournament, provide an early indication of the players making their mark. Some names are expected, while others have surged into contention thanks to standout performances. The data captures not only goals and assists but also the actions that help create chances, progress attacks and prevent opportunities.
