The BBC has reported that Spain's victory over Argentina in Sunday's World Cup final attracted a peak audience of 15.8 million viewers on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The match, which saw Ferran Torres score an extra-time winner to secure Spain's second World Cup title, achieved a 64% share of all TV viewing in the UK, with an average audience of 13.9 million.
Streaming and digital engagement
The final was streamed 11.1 million times across BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, including 2.4 million UHD streams on iPlayer. The BBC Sport live text coverage on the website and app recorded more than 18.8 million views, with 14.2 million of those coming from within the UK.
Across the entire World Cup tournament, the BBC achieved an overall reach of 42.8 million viewers on television. Audiences streamed World Cup matches 237 million times on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app, more than double the figure for the 2022 World Cup. Football content dominated BBC iPlayer, accounting for 33% of all streaming during the competition.
Digital and social media performance
The BBC Sport website and app attracted 57.2 million unique visitors, who viewed content 1.7 billion times. Match highlights were streamed 67.3 million times, while the new BBC Football YouTube channel generated 100 million views across a range of content. On social media, clips, interviews, analysis, press conferences, and fan moments garnered 2.55 billion video views. The top-performing video was an interview with Egypt winger Mostafa Zico following Egypt's elimination by Argentina, which received 77 million views on TikTok alone.
Third-place play-off and overall tournament
Saturday's third-place play-off between England and France drew a peak audience of 11.8 million on BBC One and iPlayer, with an average of 10.8 million viewers.
