Short overview

Four Scotland supporters from Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, became the first known UK winners of the Boston Red Sox 50/50 raffle, winning $10,676.90 after buying a $40 ticket at Fenway Park.

Four Scotland supporters from Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, have become what the Boston Red Sox believe to be the first UK winners of the club's 50/50 raffle, taking home $10,676.90 (£8,066.45) after buying a single $40 ticket.

Winning ticket at Fenway Park

The two father-son duos—Peter and Paul Innes, and John and Ross Henderson—attended the Scotland Celebration night at Fenway Park on Saturday, the evening after Steve Clarke's side defeated Haiti in their opening World Cup match. On Sunday, as the Red Sox faced the Texas Rangers, the group pooled their money to buy a raffle ticket. After checking the number repeatedly, they discovered they had won the $21,353.80 (£16,132.90) prize pool, half of which goes to the Red Sox Foundation.

First UK winners

Staff at the Red Sox said they could not recall a winner from the United Kingdom and struggled to find records of any international winners in recent years. The men were presented with their cheque before the Red Sox' match against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

"It's just surreal," said Paul Innes, who has followed Scotland home and away with his father for over a decade. "It's not really sunk in."

John Henderson added: "My best pal, his son, my son, amazing. What a trip we've had!"

Tartan Army in Boston

The Tartan Army had marched to Fenway Park before taking in the Red Sox's defeat to the Texas Rangers, a night that made global headlines. The group's win adds to what was already a memorable weekend for the Scottish supporters.
