A mural of England footballers Jude Bellingham and Morgan Rogers eating orange chips has appeared on the side of a chip shop in Birmingham. The artwork, created by Dudley artist Dion Kitson, was installed on the wall of the Classic Fryer chippy on Hagley Road in Quinton.
Orange chips, also known as battered chips, are a local delicacy in the Black Country. The mural shows the two players, both born in the region, tucking into the dish. Kitson posted a video on his Instagram account on Friday showing himself pasting the artwork onto the building. “From the heart of the Black Country,” he wrote in the post. In a subsequent post, he described the artwork as “two star boys” and added that Classic Fryer were “great sports”.
Public reaction
Commenting on Kitson’s Instagram page, people described the mural as “brilliant”. One user said: “Saw this yesterday and wondered who it was, great work.” The mural appeared as England prepared to face Norway in the quarter-final of the World Cup, with the match scheduled to kick off in Miami at 22:00 BST on Saturday.
Player backgrounds
Jude Bellingham
Born in Stourbridge, Bellingham has been one of England’s standout players during the tournament. He scored two goals in 98 seconds as England defeated Mexico in the round of 16. He began his youth career at Stourbridge Juniors before joining Birmingham City’s youth side and breaking into the first team. The now 23-year-old then moved to German side Borussia Dortmund, where he played until signing for Real Madrid in 2023.
Morgan Rogers
Rogers, also 23, was born in Halesowen and attended Sandwell Academy, where he was part of the side that won the National Schools Cup in 2017. He spent his youth career at West Bromwich Albion, making his professional debut for the first team in 2019. Rogers signed for Manchester City later that year before loan spells at Lincoln City, Bournemouth and Blackpool. He moved to Middlesbrough in 2023 and spent seven months there before signing for Aston Villa, where he has since made 85 appearances and scored 21 goals.
The mural adds to the growing excitement around the England team as they continue their World Cup campaign.
