According to sources, Maldini and Leonardo had advocated for the appointment of Andrea Pirlo as the new head coach of the Azzurri. However, President Malagò opposed Pirlo's candidacy due to the former midfielder's commercial ties with Russian brands. The president's refusal to approve Pirlo led to the immediate resignation of both Maldini and Leonardo.

Short-Lived Tenure
