Spain defeat Uruguay 1-0 to top Group H at World Cup

Short overview
Spain secured top spot in Group H with a 1-0 win over Uruguay, eliminating La Celeste from the 2026 World Cup. Alex Baena's first-half goal and a red card for Agustin Canobbio sealed Uruguay's fate.
Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 on Monday to secure first place in Group H of the FIFA World Cup 2026, eliminating the South American side from the tournament. Alex Baena's goal in the 42nd minute proved decisive as La Roja's possession-based game overwhelmed La Celeste.
Match Overview
Spain dominated possession throughout the match, as expected, but struggled to create clear chances until late in the first half. Baena, receiving a low cross from Marcos Llorente on the left side of the penalty area, controlled the ball and fired a shot that Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera failed to hold. The ball trickled into the far corner, giving Spain the lead.
Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa made a bold decision at halftime, substituting Muslera for Sergio Rochet in an attempt to change the momentum. Despite increased pressure from La Celeste in the second half, Spain's efficient passing game kept them at bay. Ferran Torres nearly added a second goal in the dying minutes but hit the crossbar.
Uruguay's Disappointing Exit
The match ended on a sour note for Uruguay when Agustin Canobbio was sent off deep into injury time for a tackle on Pau Cubarsi. The defeat marked a dismal end to the tournament for Bielsa's side, who failed to advance past the group stage.
"I wasn't able to maximize the potential of Uruguay's players. With Valverde's substitution, I sought to have a stronger presence in attack," Bielsa said after the match.
Spain's Historic Win
This victory is Spain's first against Uruguay in a FIFA World Cup, following two previous draws. Spain will now face the runners-up from Group J in the Round of 32 on July 2 in Los Angeles.
"The truth is we knew it would be tough, that we were playing for first place and they were playing for their lives. Maybe it wasn't the same game as last time, but it was necessary to play like that. It's probably one of the most important goals of my career," said Baena.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente praised his team's performance: "I feel really happy. This squad has been outstanding. Our team has been amazing. Our efforts led to us being in this situation at the top of the group. This is a long path. This team does not concede much and it's a striking team. They're unbeatable. They improve every minute. We can develop our football in different ways."
