Netherlands suffer World Cup penalty shoot-out heartache

Short overview
The Netherlands were eliminated from the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Morocco. Jan Paul van Hecke expressed his devastation as the Oranje's title dream ended in stoppage-time heartbreak.
The Netherlands' FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign came to a crushing end as they lost to Morocco on penalties in the round of 16. Defender Jan Paul van Hecke described feeling "completely empty" after the Oranje's title dream was shattered in dramatic fashion.
Match Overview
Ronald Koeman's side had entered the knockout stage as one of the tournament's standout teams, topping Group F with 10 goals in three matches. They took the lead through Cody Gakpo and appeared destined for the quarter-finals. However, Morocco equalised deep into stoppage time, forcing extra time and eventually a penalty shootout, which Morocco won.
Van Hecke's Reaction
"I feel completely empty after this elimination," Van Hecke told FIFA. "I'm hugely disappointed that we didn't qualify for the next round. Our dream was to win the World Cup, so right now it hurts so much to see that all disappear."
The Brighton defender reflected on the match, noting that the Netherlands had a good first half and created chances. "In the second half, maybe we dropped a little too deep. But I don't think Morocco created many chances. They had more possession than us, but that was about it."
Fatigue and Penalties
Fatigue became a factor as the match wore on. "We ran out of energy towards the end of the game," Van Hecke said. "That's why we tried to play on the counter-attack to create chances. We had already scored the opening goal, so it's incredibly difficult to concede an equaliser in stoppage time. And then it becomes even more painful when you lose on penalties."
The defeat revived memories of Qatar 2022, when the Netherlands were eliminated by Argentina on penalties. Koeman had emphasised penalty practice but acknowledged the psychological pressure of a shootout cannot be replicated in training. Van Hecke offered a simple explanation: "I don't think there's much to say about penalties. They're part of football. Today, luck wasn't on our side."
