Erling Haaland's stunning second goal in Norway's 2-1 victory over Brazil has been voted the best strike of the Round of 16 in the Hyundai Goal of the Tournament award. The Manchester City forward's powerful finish earned 34 per cent of the vote from FIFA.com users worldwide, ahead of Lionel Messi's sensational equaliser for Argentina against Egypt (25 per cent) and Morocco's Azzedine Ounahi (16 per cent).
Haaland's decisive double
Haaland, playing in his first FIFA World Cup, has scored seven goals in the tournament so far. In the Round of 16 match against five-time champions Brazil at New York New Jersey Stadium on 5 July, he first headed Norway into the lead in the 79th minute, rising above defender Gabriel Magalhaes. Then, in the 90th minute, he received the ball at the corner of the Brazil box, took a touch with his right foot, a second with his left to set himself, and unleashed a thunderbolt with his third touch that arrowed across goalkeeper Alisson and into the bottom corner.
Voting process and previous winners
This is the third phase of voting for the Hyundai Goal of the Tournament. The winner of the group stage vote was Uzbekistan captain Eldor Shomurodov for his goal against Congo DR, while Sidny Lopes Cabral's wonder-goal for Cabo Verde against Argentina topped the Round of 32 poll. Subsequent votes will be held after the quarter-finals and semi-finals (combined), with each voting window lasting 48 hours. A final vote at the end of the tournament will determine the overall winner.
Norway's path forward
Norway held on through added time despite a late Neymar penalty for Brazil. The team, coached by Stale Solbakken, now faces England in Miami on Saturday, 11 July, with a World Cup semi-final against either Argentina or Switzerland at stake.
