Argentina and France among quartet eyeing knockout stage

Short overview
Argentina face Austria in a top-of-the-table Group J clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while France take on Iraq in Group I. Both European sides can secure early qualification, while their opponents seek first points.
Groups I and J return to action on Monday, 22 July, at the FIFA World Cup 2026, with four teams aiming to secure early qualification for the Round of 32. Reigning champions Argentina square off against Austria in Dallas to determine potential top spot in Group J, while Jordan clash with Algeria as both sides look to bounce back from defeats. In Group I, Kylian Mbappe's France lock horns with Iraq, and high-flying Norway take on African powerhouses Senegal.
Group J: Argentina vs Austria
After Lionel Messi's hat-trick feat against Algeria, Argentina will qualify as Group J winners and advance to meet the Group H runners-up in Miami on 3 July if they defeat Austria and Jordan do not beat Algeria. Austria, managed by Ralf Rangnick, have the same opportunity: they will top the group if they overcome the Albiceleste and Algeria do not defeat Jordan.
Algeria will be eliminated if they lose to Jordan and Austria avoid defeat against Argentina. Jordan will suffer the same fate if they lose in San Francisco and Argentina avoid defeat by Austria.
Group I: France vs Iraq
Two-time champions France aim to build on their opening win against Senegal when they face Iraq. A victory would put them on the verge of the knockout stage. Iraq, meanwhile, are seeking their first points of the tournament after losing to Norway.
Norway vs Senegal
Norway, buoyed by their win over Iraq, take on Senegal in a match that could solidify their qualification hopes. Senegal, runners-up in the Africa Cup of Nations, need a positive result to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
All matches are part of the group stage, with the top two from each group advancing to the Round of 32. The tournament, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, features 48 teams for the first time.
