Short overview

Scotland captain Caroline Weir has signed a three-year contract with Lyon, the French champions and Champions League runners-up. The 30-year-old midfielder, a 2025 Ballon d'Or nominee, left Real Madrid after four seasons without winning silverware.

Scotland captain Caroline Weir has joined Lyon, the French champions and Champions League runners-up, on a three-year contract. The 30-year-old midfielder, a 2025 Ballon d'Or nominee, described the move as a 'no-brainer' after leaving Real Madrid.

Move to Lyon

Weir, who spent four seasons at Real Madrid, scoring 63 goals in 125 appearances, said she was 'super excited' to join the club she regards as having the greatest history in women's football. 'For me, it's the club with the most history in the women's game,' she told Lyon's website. 'To be part of this project, the ambition of the club was in line with what I want to achieve, so I guess it was a no-brainer in many ways to commit to this club.'

Career background

The 121-cap Scotland international began her career at Hibernian before moving to Arsenal, Bristol Academy, Liverpool, Manchester City, and then Real Madrid. At Real, she was voted player of the year in 2023 and 2025, and was named Spanish league player of the year three years ago. However, her side finished runners-up to Barcelona in each of her four seasons, and she expressed regret at not helping them win silverware.

Lyon's pedigree

Lyon have won their domestic league five seasons in a row, including a league and cup double last term. They have also won the Champions League a record eight times, though not since 2022. This season, they were beaten 4-0 in the final by Barcelona, who had also eliminated Weir's Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Ballon d'Or nomination

Last year, Weir became the first Scottish player to be nominated for the Ballon d'Or award. She will now aim to help Lyon reclaim European glory while continuing her international career.
