Sophie Baggaley returns to Birmingham City on free transfer

Newly-promoted Birmingham City have signed goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley as a free agent following her departure from Brighton & Hove Albion. The 29-year-old returns to the club where she began her career at the age of six and made her senior debut in 2014.

Baggaley has agreed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year, according to sources. After leaving Birmingham, she played for Bristol City and Manchester United before joining Brighton in 2023, where she made 42 appearances. She has been a regular in England squads since 2025 but has yet to earn a senior international cap.

“When you start your career somewhere, you always have a soft spot for it,” Baggaley said. “Birmingham helped build the foundations for my career and hopefully now I can give a little bit back.”

She added: “The club has been through so many different stages over the last few years, but it’s clear how much Birmingham has invested in the women’s team and I’m really excited to be part of that.”

Brighton departure

Baggaley was voted Brighton’s player of the season in her debut campaign but saw her playing time reduced following the arrival of Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie. Brighton confirmed last month that Baggaley would leave at the end of her contract in June.

Manager’s praise

Birmingham manager Amy Merricks highlighted Baggaley’s experience and leadership. “Sophie knows what it means to represent Birmingham City and she’s returning as a far more experienced player than when she was here,” Merricks said. “She has built up a lot of WSL experience over the last few years, and she will add real quality, leadership and competition to our goalkeeping group.”
