Manchester United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Janina Leitzig from Leicester City for an undisclosed fee, the club announced. The 27-year-old becomes United's second summer signing following the arrival of defender Andrea Medina.
Transfer details and contract
It is understood that Leitzig has signed a three-year contract with United after the club triggered the release clause in her Leicester contract, which was renewed in 2025. The German shot-stopper had been a long-term target for United; BBC Sport first reported in 2023 that the club had made contact with her while she was on loan at Leicester.
Leitzig's career path
Leitzig spent three years at Leicester City, initially joining on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich before making the move permanent. She became a regular starter for the Foxes, making nearly 70 appearances across all competitions. However, she was unable to prevent Leicester's relegation from the Women's Super League last season.
Player's reaction
Speaking about her move, Leitzig said: "It is a real honour to be a Manchester United player. I'm ready to bring all of my experience of competing at the highest level to help the team to have a successful season." She added: "I am joining a really excellent group of goalkeepers. Everyone has told me about the great environment that they have created. I cannot wait to push all together to maintain the high performance standards that this club deserves."
Leitzig will wear the number 25 shirt at Manchester United. The club will be hoping her experience strengthens their goalkeeping department as they aim for a strong campaign in the Women's Super League.
