Short overview

Carlos Queiroz has confirmed he will leave his role as Ghana coach following the Black Stars' Round of 32 exit at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The 73-year-old led Ghana through the group stage before a 1-0 loss to Colombia ended their campaign.

Carlos Queiroz has confirmed he will step down as head coach of the Ghana national team following the Black Stars' elimination in the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician took charge in April 2026, just months before the global finals, and guided Ghana through a competitive group stage.

World Cup campaign

Under Queiroz, Ghana opened their Group H campaign with a 1-0 victory over Panama. They then secured a hard-fought 0-0 draw against England, a result that boosted their knockout-stage hopes. In their final group match, Ghana fell 2-1 to Croatia but still advanced to the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams.

Round of 32 defeat

In the knockout round, Ghana faced Colombia and were narrowly defeated 1-0, ending their World Cup journey. The match proved to be Queiroz's final game in charge of the Black Stars.

Queiroz's statement

"To my president and board, thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the Ghana national football team. It was an honour and privilege to serve the country and the Black Stars. To my players and staff, my deepest gratitude for your courage, commitment and unwavering dedication to the team. To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football's greatest stage."

Queiroz's departure marks the end of a brief but eventful tenure. The veteran coach, who previously managed Portugal, Iran, Colombia, and Egypt, brought a wealth of experience to the Ghana setup. His exit leaves the Ghana Football Association searching for a new head coach ahead of the next international window.
