Senegal's Gueye refuses to play under current coaching staff

Short overview
Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye announced he will not play for the national team while the current coaching staff remains. The decision follows Senegal's dramatic World Cup elimination by Belgium and ongoing controversy over the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.
Senegal international Pape Gueye has announced he will take a break from representing his country as long as the current coaching staff, led by Pape Thiaw, remains in charge. The 27-year-old Villarreal midfielder made the statement on social media after Senegal's dramatic World Cup exit at the hands of Belgium.
World Cup elimination sparks frustration
Senegal led 2-0 in their last-32 tie against Belgium through goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr. However, late strikes from Romelu Lukaku and Youri Tielemans forced extra time. In the 125th minute, Belgium were awarded a controversial penalty, which Tielemans converted to seal a 3-2 victory and knock Senegal out of the tournament. Gueye started the match but was substituted after 66 minutes for Lamine Camara.
In his social media post, Gueye said: "I will come back to say a few words about the elimination... but I am announcing today that as long as this coaching staff is in place, I will be taking a break from the national team." Gueye has earned 45 caps for Senegal and scored twice, including a goal in the group-stage win over Iraq.
Ongoing controversy under Thiaw
Pape Thiaw has been Senegal's head coach since December 2024. His tenure has been marked by controversy, particularly surrounding the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco. In that match, Thiaw led his players off the field after Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty. The players returned after a delay of approximately 17 minutes, and Brahim Diaz's penalty was saved. Gueye then scored an extra-time winner, seemingly giving Senegal the title.
However, in March 2025, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned the result of the final, declaring Morocco the winners due to Senegal's walk-off. The decision stripped Senegal of the title and deepened the rift between players and the coaching staff.
Gueye's future uncertain
Gueye, who plays for La Liga side Villarreal, has not indicated whether his break is temporary or permanent. His statement suggests he will not reconsider until the coaching staff is replaced. The midfielder's absence would be a significant loss for Senegal, as he has been a key figure in the squad. The Senegalese football federation has not yet responded to Gueye's announcement.
