Colombia 3-1 Uzbekistan: Luis Diaz Shines in World Cup Group K Opener

Colombia marked their return to the FIFA World Cup with a thrilling 3-1 victory over debutants Uzbekistan in their Group K opener, thanks to an inspirational performance by Luis Diaz. The South Americans took early control of the group after Portugal were held to a draw by Congo DR in the other match.

First Half: Colombia Dominate but Wasteful

Backed by their boisterous supporters, Colombia had the first meaningful chance in the 17th minute when midfielder Jhon Arias struck the side netting from distance. The South Americans came even closer in the 32nd minute when the outstanding Diaz guided a left-footed effort past Uzbek goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov and onto the foot of the post.

The breakthrough came five minutes before halftime. Diaz's pinpoint pass over the Uzbek backline was expertly flicked on by Daniel Munoz with the outside of his boot to give Colombia a deserved lead.

Second Half: Uzbekistan Equalize, Diaz Strikes Back

Uzbekistan refused to give up and leveled the scores in the 60th minute. Dostonbek Khamdamov's volleyed effort following Eldor Shomurdov's left-wing cross struck the post and fell into the path of Abbosbek Fayzullaev, who headed home for a historic goal — Uzbekistan's first in a World Cup.

The debutants' joy was short-lived, however. Colombia immediately fought back and restored the lead in the 65th minute when Diaz's low strike hit the gloves of Yusupov and crossed the line. It was Diaz's inaugural World Cup goal.

Late Drama: Campaz Seals the Win

The three points were sealed deep into injury time — the 99th minute — when Cucho Hernandez brilliantly won the ball on the right wing and crossed to fellow substitute Jaminton Campaz, who powered home a header.

Prior to this match, Colombia had lost their opening match in four of their six FIFA World Cup appearances, including a 2-1 defeat by Japan at Russia 2018.
