Short overview

Torbay Council plans to set up a giant screen in Abbey Park, Torquay, for England's World Cup knockout matches. Up to 10,000 fans could attend, and police are preparing for potential domestic violence increases.

Torbay Council has confirmed that if England's national football team advances to the knockout stages of the World Cup, a giant screen will be installed in Abbey Park, Torquay, allowing thousands of fans to watch matches by the seaside.

The council's spokesperson stated that planning is underway and further details will be announced closer to the time, contingent on England's progression under manager Thomas Tuchel.

Police preparations and public safety

Chief Inspector James Stock of Devon and Cornwall Police said the force is making preparations for the potential event, which could accommodate up to 10,000 spectators, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Stock noted that extra officers are on standby to handle a potential increase in domestic violence linked to the World Cup.

"We know there is a potential increase linked to sporting events, particularly football," Stock said. "We have additional resources in place for England and Scotland's main games."
