England players will be advised not to jump over advertising hoardings after Jordan Henderson suffered a freak wrist injury in the aftermath of their World Cup victory over Mexico. The Brentford midfielder is expected to undergo surgery, casting doubt on his participation for the remainder of the tournament.
Injury during celebrations
Henderson, 36, injured his wrist while celebrating England's 3-2 win at the Azteca Stadium. As he attempted to hurdle the advertising hoardings, he landed awkwardly on his arm and was taken from the field on a stretcher. He remained in hospital in Mexico City on Sunday evening, accompanied by a member of England's medical team, and did not travel back with the squad to their base in Kansas City.
Manager's reaction
Manager Thomas Tuchel expressed concern after the match. "Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist," Tuchel told BBC One. "It looks really bad. It's a quite serious injury and it doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital."
Preventive measures
It is understood that Tuchel will instruct his players to avoid jumping over hoardings in future to prevent a repeat incident. The injury has prompted a review of post-match celebrations as England continue their World Cup campaign.
