Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway defeated Senegal 3-2 to secure progression to the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The victory at New York/New Jersey Stadium ensured Norway's place in the knockout stage with one group match remaining.
First-half breakthrough
Chances were limited in a tight opening period, but Norway took the lead in the 43rd minute. Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly made an error, allowing Marcus Holmgren Pedersen to pounce and fire home from close range.
Haaland extends scoring streak
Three minutes after the restart, Haaland doubled Norway's advantage. Martin Odegaard delivered an inch-perfect pass, and Haaland calmly slotted home. The goal extended his remarkable scoring run to 12 consecutive competitive appearances for Norway.
Senegal pulled one back in the 53rd minute through Ismaila Sarr, but Haaland restored Norway's two-goal lead five minutes later, poking in from close range. The striker now has four goals in two World Cup games and 59 goals in 52 appearances for his country.
Late drama but Norway holds on
Sarr made Norway sweat by scoring again in stoppage time (90+3), but Stale Solbakken's side held on for the victory. The win means Norway's four World Cup victories have come against teams from four different confederations: Mexico (Concacaf) in 1994, Brazil (CONMEBOL) in 1998, Iraq (AFC) in 2026, and now Senegal (CAF).
Golden Boot race heats up
Haaland is firmly in contention for the adidas Golden Boot, alongside Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. After the match, Haaland said: "It was tough. We're a little disappointed. But it's not over yet, there's still a third game to play. We're going to go there to win it, and we're going to work hard."
Senegal forward Ismaila Sarr reflected on the match: "It was special again. Another amazing night and I'm super proud." Haaland added: "I'm enjoying it a lot. I've enjoyed playing for Norway ever since my debut and you can see that. The World Cup is nice!"
