Short overview

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches its 1000th match, FIFA highlights historic milestone games, from the first matches in 1930 to centenary finals and simultaneous kick-offs.

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches its 1000th match, FIFA has highlighted the landmark fixtures that have shaped the tournament's history. The milestone will be reached on Saturday, 20 June, when Tunisia face Japan in Monterrey in a Group F encounter, marking the 1000th game of the global showpiece.

First Matches and Early Milestones

The inaugural World Cup in 1930 featured two simultaneous matches that share the honor of being the first-ever fixtures: USA vs. Belgium and France vs. Mexico. USA went on to reach the semi-finals, eventually finishing third—their best-ever result. France, meanwhile, scored the first World Cup goal through Lucien Laurent after 19 minutes against Mexico. Despite losing goalkeeper Alex Thepot to injury early on (with outfield player Augustin Chantrel taking over in goal, as substitutions were not yet allowed), France won the match but were eliminated in the group stage after defeats to Argentina and Chile.

Centenary and Bicentennial Matches

The 100th World Cup match took place just before the 1954 final, as beaten semi-finalists Austria and Uruguay faced off. Both had topped their groups but had not met earlier due to the tournament's format. Twelve years later, the 200th match coincided with the 1966 final, where hosts England defeated West Germany 4-2 at Wembley. Geoff Hurst became the first player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final, a record he held alone until Kylian Mbappé matched it in 2022.

Simultaneous Kick-offs and Other Milestones

In 1978, two matches were played simultaneously to conclude the Second Round, with both serving as milestone fixtures. Netherlands drew with West Germany to reach the final, while Italy beat Austria to secure third place. However, both teams lost their subsequent matches: Netherlands fell to Argentina in the final, and Italy lost to Brazil in the third-place match. The 300th match came in 1986, a second-round clash between Argentina and Uruguay. Diego Maradona inspired Argentina to a 1-0 victory, with Pedro Pasculli scoring the only goal just before half-time. Argentina went on to win the tournament, defeating England, Belgium, and West Germany en route.

The 500th match occurred during the 1994 group stage, with a thrilling final round of Group D fixtures. Nigeria beat Greece to top the group, while Bulgaria defeated an Argentina side missing Diego Maradona (who had failed a doping test). Nigeria, Bulgaria, and Argentina all advanced to the Round of 16, but only Bulgaria progressed further, reaching the semi-finals before losing to Italy. The only centennial milestone match without a goal was the 800th game in 2002, a group-stage draw between France and Uruguay. France, the defending champions, managed only one point and failed to score in the tournament, while Uruguay also exited in the group stage.

The 1000th match will be played on 20 June 2026, as Tunisia and Japan meet in Monterrey. The fixture underscores the global reach of the World Cup, featuring teams from Africa and Asia in a tournament hosted by North America.
