Daughter recalls father's role as England's 1966 World Cup doctor

Annie Onions has shared memories of her father, Dr Neil Phillips, who served as the England national football team's doctor during their historic 1966 World Cup triumph. Phillips, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 92, was deeply proud of his contribution to the team's success.

A Proud Role in Football History

Dr Phillips was part of the backroom staff that supported manager Sir Alf Ramsey and the squad that defeated West Germany 4-2 in the final at Wembley Stadium. Onions recalled that her father often spoke of the honor of working with the players and the camaraderie within the team.

Memories of a Dedicated Doctor

"He was so proud to be the England team doctor," Onions said. "He loved every moment of it and always talked about how dedicated the players were." Phillips, a general practitioner from London, was appointed to the role in 1964 and remained with the team until after the 1970 World Cup.

Onions noted that her father rarely sought the spotlight but cherished the experience. "He wasn't one for fame, but he was thrilled to be part of something so special for the country," she added.

The 1966 World Cup remains England's only major tournament win, and the contributions of support staff like Phillips are often overlooked.
